Love, Simon.

"Mom, Dad, I'm straight”

How weird is that?

Honestly, that's how Simon thinks everyone should "out" their sexual preference.

"Love, Simon" a film that was released in 2018 is a romantic love story between two teenagers from the LGBT community. Simon Sapir is a 17-year-old teenage boy, who has a warm and loving family and three close friends: Nick, Leah, and Abi. He hides his secret from them all: being gay.

One day, Leah informs Simon about a post by an anonymous person, who goes by the fictitious name Blue,  published on a popular blog at school saying that he is gay. Simon contacts Blue via email, identifying himself by the fictitious name "Jacques", and the two reveal personal details about their lives to each other. After a while, their emails are accidentally discovered by another student at the school, who is in love with Abi. The student blackmails Simon with threats that he will reveal his secret to the entire school unless he agrees to help him get Abi.

This is an important film that shows an example of a supportive and understanding environment of an adolescent boy who comes out of the closet. I believe it is important for teens to know that accepting their sexual orientation will not always be difficult and painful. There is also a need for a positive image, which most films do not deal with or show the viewers.

The film is made in a modern, good and intriguing in a way, that allows the audience to watch the representative of a successful, milestone of inclusion of the LGBTQ community.

The riddle of who Blue is, leaves the viewers in suspense throughout the film by intriguing descriptions, theories, and their refutation.

The end is exciting and surprising! I Recommend watching it on your own and screening it in your classrooms.

  1. Hi Reut, I watched this short movie (below), this kid comes home telling his parents he's got something to tell them, the parents immediatly tell the kid that they will always love him unconditionally, the kid tells the parents: "I'm a Republican". The parents throw a fit telling the kid to leave and never come back. "But I'm also gay". The parents burst into joyous hugs saying; "We always knew you were different". I'm simplifying the story but I guess the human condition is complicated, I salut you for bringing this topic to your class.
